Raina has arrived!
June 27, 2010
Raina is one of 22 neglected horses seized in Fremont County in July of 2007. She has foaled in the past an unknown number of times and to our knowledge although she is about 14 years old had little handling or training. Raina is a part Arabian. Based on conformation, build, primitive markings, behavior, and research into the former owner's breeding history Raina is likely mixed with Mustang. She is a stocky girl with some zebra striping on both front legs, and a black dorsal stripe. She came from a herd of Arabians, Half Arabians, and Pintabians, some of which were registered and some not. Her prior owner was convicted of Animal Cruelty and sentenced to 6 months in Jail and will be required to pay restitution to the local horse rescues who were able to take in and rehabiliate this herd.

Update August 1, 2010:  Raina returned to Ruby Ranch Horse Rescue for a two week break.  Raina will return here for additional training the last two weeks of August. CLICK HERE FOR A 30 DAY PROGRESS REPORT and see her detailed training notes below by reading Raina's Daily Log.

She is happy to be reunited with her former herdmate, Juliet, and has settled in and started her training. She is calm and a pleasure to work with. Raina is available for adoption through Ruby Ranch Horse Rescue to an approved home. Raina needs a family to love her who will treat her gently and provide her the company of at least one other horse and plently of room to roam. Raina does not like confinement and prefers pasture turn out with a run-in shed.  She cribs when nervous or when confined in a stall or closed pen. She prefers fresh air and being able to see other horses and the activities going on around her. Raina will require a patient experienced handler. She is normally quiet and gentle but due to traumatic experiences in the past her behavior when frightened or panicked would be dangerous for an inexperienced person. Her handling and training must be consistent, slow, and methodical taking into consideration her fears as a result of past experiences. Raina is a beautiful, intelligent, very special mare who is looking for her special human to build a relationship with.

Raina's adoption fee: $800

Adoption Package Includes: Raina, Halter, Lead Rope, The Clip safety device for tying with accompanying lead, Grooming Kit, 3 Complementary riding lessons or training sessions with Lori Torrini at Deseos Arabians & Miniatures LLC, Equine Microchip implanted in Raina with Pre-Paid lifetime registration, folder containing Raina's medical & training records, and discount on lessons/training/sevices at Deseos Arabians & Miniatures LLC for the lifetime of the horse.

Special Needs: Raina has a high level of anxiety about bitting and things over her ears from a past trauma. She has a significant scar on her forehead and up around her right ear. Raina does just fine in a bitless bridle and with halter or bridle set up that buckles behind her ears and does not need to be slipped over them. UPDATE (1 Sept 2010): Raina is now allowing us to touch and carefully handle her right ear. I have successfully placed the lunge cavesson on her and over her ears during our last two training sessions with no problem. She is good about saddling and is rock solid at the mounting block, stands perfectly still for mounting!
