Jim and Wildfire attended a two-day clinic with Steve Mantle. Wildfire was saddled for the first time! You can learn more about Steve Mantle and the Wild Horse Adoption Program by visiting:

February 2010: Wildfire halters, stands while tied, Is good for the vet and farrier, leads, loads and trailers well, has been saddled, and is learning to work on the lunge. Wildfire had a rough beginning which limited his early training. Since coming to live with us in October 2007 he has had hernia surgery and leg surgery for an OCD lesion. He is very used to being at the vet and great with bandaging and being medicated! He will start serious learning this summer after he turnes 3 years old.
Moondust & Lori
February 2010: Moondust is doing great. He is just enjoying being a horse and having Lori love on him. He will startin serious training on the lunge and in-hand this summer after turning 3 years old. Riding work under saddle will begin next year when he is 4 years old.
MOONDUST

Moondust and Lori participated in a two-day clinic with
Steve and Nick Mantle. The weekend was a complete success. Moondust was perfect about getting in and out of the trailer all weekend, worked well when separated from his brother, and took really well to the training surrounding at Lasting Partnership Training Center where he had never been before. We worked a little bit on lunging and moving the shoulders and hindquarters, pre-mounting work on the fence, de-sensitizing to leg and hands over back and around head, siting on saddle from the fence, yielding the head and neck from the ground, jumping up from both sides, laying across his back, sacking out with a saddle pad, saddling, and jumping up on and laying across the saddle. Moondust was great and caught onto everything with no problems!!! With homework from Steve to do between now and then, we should be ready to do some actual riding this fall or next spring.

Mooondust is amazing! He is just a year and a half old and carrying a saddle and wearing a bridle like he's done it tons of times. He is calm and easy to work with, no problems at all saddling and bridling. He is still too young to ride but he is wearing tack in-hand and we are doing lots of ground handling. Moondust currently leads, stands tied, trailers, comes/halts/backs on command, stands for grooming and for feet trimming, and joyously allows touching everywhere! He is starting to become quite the attention hound. We are so proud of him. He has come a long way since October 2007 when we brought him home. It was two months before we could even get near him or touch him at all. After two sessions with Lori doing "approach & retreat" he learned to trust and there is no stopping his progress now!
Moondust had his first "explosion" last week while walking out to the arena wearing saddle and bridle he finally decided to buck and crow hop, then he took offaround the pasture jumping a fence and blowing through a gate to get back to the herd. Amazingly he was not hurt and neither was the tack! He then proceeded to walk back out to the arena with Lori and quietly stand and follow her around while she taught a lesson. Moondust then completed an obastacle course in-hand and jumped a cross rail - all with saddle and bridle and as calm as could be. He continues to be outstanding about being handled and his the best horse we have about getting his feet done. He allows total touching at liberty and while haltered.
