Instructor: LoriLori began formal english riding training in 1981at the age of eleven while living in Illinois. Training under German Instructor, Sonia Kershaw, at Magic Carpet Stables. Her early training consisted of English horsemanship, horse care, jumping, vaulting, and driving. She later studied jumping and dressage under an American trainer and competed in both during middle school and high school.
Lori continued to ride and train in Alabama while attending college and concentrated on jumping. During a two year stay in Germany Lori trained under a Scottish trainer learning cross country jumping and eventing.
It wasn't until after moving to Colorado in 1991 that Lori expanded her riding education into Western, Cross Country Pair Paces, and Competitive Trail Riding. Initially Lori continued to study jumping and dressage with two local trainers, then did some English Pleasure with a local Arabian trainer. Upon getting her own horse in 1993 Lori began to learn western riding as well as continue English training and started doing competitive trail rides. She began teaching others in 1996 and continues to further her own education by taking advanced lessons, attending seminars, and riding in clinics. In 2007 Lori started studying Classical Equitation under the guidence of Madeline Wise from California. She continues to study and train the principles of classical horsemanship passing what she learns on to her own students. Lori specializes in using the concepts of classical training to teach the recreational rider how beneficial classical training can be to the every day rider and horse.
Lori trained her first horse from start to finish in 1994 and has since trained 8 of her own horses in addition to training horses for others. She is currently starting the three year old mustang (Moondust) pictured with her above. Moondust was a wild mustang adopted off the range in the Black Hills South Dakota area in October 2007. He is the first wild horse Lori has trained and it's going well. Lori has a total of three 3 year olds she is starting this year. She is also working with four horses ages 4 to 8 years that are "re-starts" that came to her from rescue situations.
Lori uses natural training methods based on praise and reward not on force. She rides and teaches using this same philosophy. Lori guides students to use natural aids when riding and does not use artificial devices to control the horses. Horses are ridden in snaffle bridles with no nosebands and proper saddle fit is ensured for each horse. Training is not rushed, it is tailored to each horse's own ability. Lori continues her riding education under the guidence of Classical Equitation instructor Madeline Wise from California.
Assistant: Jim
Jim began riding horses like most people, doing trail rides on rented horses. In 2007, Jim began taking formal riding lessons. Learning basic classical horsemanship, ranch management, starting the untrained horse, and riding both English and Western using the principles of classical training. Jim has become a well rounded rider and continues to train under the guidence of Lori and Madeline.
Jim started his first horse in 2008, Copper, a Quarter Horse/Paint foaled in 2005 (shown in the photo with Jim) and plans to continue Copper's training and ride him as his main trail horse for many years.
Jim is also starting mustang (Wildfire) he got from Black Hills South Dakota in 2007, as a wild horse. Jim has taken him from a scared, wild, un-trusting colt to a friend in less then a year.
Jim started his equine education by attending John Lyon's courses with a local trainer, Debbie Bibb. He now works with Lori and Madeline Wise learning the concepts and techniques of Classical Equitation and Horsemanship which he has learned can be applied to all types of riding both Englisha and Western.
Jim's training style is much like Lori's as he uses natural methods based on praise and partnership. Jim believes that you need to become a friend with your horse and understand his needs in-order to build trust. Once you accomplish that, you develop a life long friendship and your horse will always want to please you.
Guest Instructor/Clinician:
Madeline R Wise
Deseos Arabians brings in guest instructors or clinicians for our benefit as well as to benefit our students. To further enhance our riding skills we train with Madeline Wise from California. Madeline normally makes two trips a year out to Colorado for about a week each time. Madeline is a highly accomplished dressage and combined training instructor who works with both English and Western riders using dressage and classical equitation to improve riding ability for trails, recreation, or competition. Madeline is by far one of the best instructors we have ever had the privilege to train with.
Read a detailed biography below:
Madeline was raised in Clovis, California at Khalharra Farm which bred, raised, and trained Thoroughbred horses for 3-day eventing and dressage. Khalharra was the host farm for the Fresno branch of United States Pony Club. Although her father was a cowboy, both her parents trained world renowned 3-Day Event horses. Madeline grew up learning not only from her parents but from other top trainers. In 1970 Madeline began teaching Pony Club curriculum, combined training, dressage, vaulting, and horse management. She coached Pony Club rally teams, combined training events, and dressage shows.
Madeline competed up through Fourth Level in 3-Day Eventing until she found she was happier with non-competitive riding like mountain pack trips and pleasure riding. She discovered she enjoys teaching both Western and English riders to improve their riding skills in all disciplines and at all levels from beginner up.
Madeline’s other experience includes veterinary assisting, feed and livestock supply management, and custom saddlery. Beginning with Potzernitz Saddlery, she designed and opened Tal-y-Tara Saddlery in San Francisco, California and later owned Set in the West Custom Saddlery in Clovis, California. Madeline is currently teaching classical balanced seat, equitation, ridden and driven dressage, jumping, long reigning, and all areas of horse management. Madeline trains English, Western, and Driving horses but her passion is to help riders improve their riding abilities. Madeline works with individual riders to improve their overall riding skills.
During your private lesson Madeline will help you improve your riding in order to help your horse perform better no matter what your specific goals are: trail riding, reining, barrel-racing, dressage, jumping, English or Western, etc. She will work with you at your level whether you are just starting out or have been riding for years.
At the beginning of your lesson Madeline will ask you what type of riding you do and what your personal goals are. Then she will customize and tailor the lesson specifically for you and your horse.Whether you ride for fun or competition, Madeline will concentrate solely on you and your riding. She will help you become a better, well-balanced, more natural rider which in the long run will benefit not only you, but your horse as well.
